During the September School Holidays my girlfriend and I and 5 children explored part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. We drove from Te Aroha to the Waikino Rail Station and caught the train at 11 am with our bikes. In Waihi we rode around the top of the Goldmine Pit which took about an hour. We had lunch at Subway and then cycled from Waihi back to Waikino. Beautiful ride alongside the river, children even jumped in the river to cool off. They then continued along the rail trail through the tunnel and I drove the car and trailer to collect them.

Cost: $68 for train ride for 2 adults, 5 children and 7 bikes

Estimated cycling distance: 5kms in Waihi, 11kms back to Waikino, 7kms to Karangahake Carpark
